DESCRIPTION

On the afternoon of 24 August 1794, Lisbon witnessed, in awe, the first manned flight in Portugal. The balloon, piloted by the Italian captain Vincenzo Lunardi (1754–1806), ascended into the skies from Terreiro do Paço, flew over the Tejo river, and was carried by the winds before landing near Vendas Novas, approximately 80 kilometres from its departure point.
